Buddhism is the religion of Sikkim, and special mention must be made of the Buddhist monasteries scattered around Sikkim and the Darjeeling area which once formed part of old Sikkim. Approaching the monastery buildings along ancient paths lined by prayer flags and perhaps some mani stones, there is a great sense of timelessness and peace. The only sound to be heard is perhaps the wind fluttering the prayer flags, or in bigger monasteries, the sound of young monks chanting their alphabet in the monastery classroom. The monasteries are mostly a few centuries old, and contain exquisite wall paintings and other treasures.
You can of course include a visit to one or more monasteries as part of another itinerary, but we offer a dedicated itinerary below.
MONASTERIES
8 days Drive from Darjeeling to Yoksum in Sikkim and onto the capital Gangtok, passing through beautiful villages and countryside, and visiting the ancient monasteries of Pemayangtse and Tashididing as well as the old Rabdentse palace, and other sites. Visit Rumtek monastery and villages near Gangtok. Return by different route via the old trading post of Kalimpong with its colourful weekly market, and monastery on the top of the hill. Rest day in Kalimpong before transfer to airport.
HOMESTAYS
Darjeeling is home to many different ethnic groups resulting in a rich and varied cultural tradition. We can arrange a variety of programmes for anyone wishing to learn more about our culture. One of the most rewarding is the opportunity to stay with local people in their own homes, and experience some of their traditions at first hand. Duration of programme according to requirements. CULTURAL EVENTS Visits to local festivals etc on request as available. |
