MAPS

A good (and the only) detailed map is the Swiss produced 1:150,000 Sikkim Himalaya, available from specialist outlets such as Stanfords.

BACKGROUND READING

  • Sikkim, a Travellers Guide by Sujoy Das and Arundhati Ray
  • Among the Himalayas by Waddell (first pub.1899, reprinted 1998)
a fascinating and sympathetic account of travels to Lachung and to The Sinaglila Ridge
  • Lonely Planet – The Indian Himalaya
  • The Secret Lives of Alexander David-Neel by Barbara and Michael Foster
  • Lepcha my Vanishing Tribe by A.R. Foning an affectionate description of the customs of this vanishing minority
  • Around Kanchenjunga by Douglas Freshfield a rather stuffy Victorian account of a brilliant and still unrepeated expedition
  • The Gazeteer of Sikhim by Risley a mine of information about all aspects of the region
  • The Kanchenjunga Adventure by Frank Smythe well written account of a climbing expedition

Many other books about early Himalayan climbing expeditions to Everest and Kanchenjunga begin with descriptions of their arrival in Darjeeling and subsequent trek into the mountains.
